JAMES EDWARD SOWERBY, British, (1757-1822), Botanical Study of EUPHORBIA PUNICEA, watercolour, signed discreetly on the lower stem: Js Sowerby delt 46cm x 34cm Provenance: with Colnaghi & Co. (Labelled verso) This work appears to be an original illustration by Sowerby and relates to James Edward Smith’s botanical work ‘Icones Pictae Plantarum Rariorum', (Coloured Figures of Rare Plants) (1790-93), founder of the Linnean Society. This large folio included 18 hand coloured plates by Sowerby. It includes an almost identical plate of Euphorbia Punicea in mirror image to the present lot. Attributed to ARCHIBALD THORBURN, FZS, British (1860-1935), “Frosts in the Cover, Pheasants in Winter”, gouache and watercolour, apparently unsigned, in a wide mounted and glazed frame, 41 x 55cm A slightly larger version of this work by Thorburn from his eponymous museum was sold at Sotheby’s, 31st March 1993, Lot 41. This version is signed by the lower lying branch. The back of the present work has been examined and an image is included. The cardstock appears to date to Thorburn's lifetime. Our valuer believes it supports his view that the work is likely to be by the artist.
